Eco-Friendly Leather: Carbotti Bags’ Sustainable Journey

We at Carbotti focus great attention on the climate needs of our planet. When manufacturing our leather goods, we employ climate-neutral production processes. We choose our leather suppliers carefully for their ability to adhere to the carbon-neutral label, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions. The materials undergo a life cycle analysis (LCA) to assess the greenhouse gas emissions per square meter of finished leather throughout its life cycle.

Analysis stages include animal husbandry, chemical production for tanning, and the production and transmission of electrical and thermal energy used in the tanning, dyeing, and finishing of hides and skins. Based on the data obtained from the LCA, initiatives are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including using energy from renewable sources, reducing water consumption through water recycling, limiting the use of chemicals, and improving the energy efficiency of production processes.

We believe that sustainability must not only be declared but also measured and confirmed. Therefore, we select materials for our women’s leather bags that pass specific certifications, including:

  • Biobased certification: leathers with renewal cycles, with a renewability value between 70% and 95%;
  • Blue Angel certification: leathers that meet high environmental standards, with low consumption of natural resources and minimum release of gases into the air;
  • Oeko-Tex certification: applied to hides and leather articles at all stages of processing, guaranteeing product safety for customers.

Moreover, we source from Italian tanneries that adopt LWG’s environmental and social practices. LWG assesses and certifies leather suppliers based on criteria such as environmental management, wastewater treatment, energy efficiency, and compliance with labor regulations. The minimum score our suppliers must achieve to join the LWG program on the above criteria is 75%.

Hence, the pigmented leathers of the palmellato type that we use for the production of our bags enjoy the prestigious LWG – Leather Working Group– certification, the protocol that attests to compliance with rigorous environmental standards and certifies our effort and the effort of our entire production chain towards ecological production and systemic management of Quality, Environment, Safety, and Ethics.
